David Hoyt (Stowe, Vt.) also notoriously known as 'JB' (Junior Beast) on USA-184 Goat hammered the opening day with an impressive 1-1 finish, taking the overall lead at the 2008 U.S. Melges 32 National Championship held in conjunction with the NYYC Raceweek at Newport, presented by Rolex. In second overall is Jeff Ecklund (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) on USA-32 Star and third is Stephen Pugh (Sausalito, Calif.) on USA-158 Taboo.

Liverpool's Tall Ships Festival has come to an end with a spectacular parade along the River Mersey, as the 60 vessels embark on a five-week race.

Mexican navy seizes cocaine sub


The Mexican navy says it has seized nearly six tonnes of cocaine found inside a 10m-long (31ft) makeshift submarine in the Pacific Ocean. A naval spokesman said they had known about such submarines but this was the first time they had seen one. US intelligence helped in the operation.

A French aircraft carrier which was too toxic to break up in India is to be scrapped by a firm embroiled in a row over so-called US "ghost ships". Hartlepool-based Able UK said the deal to scrap the 32,700-tonne Clemenceau is the biggest of its kind in Europe.
