The Moorings and Robertson and Caine: South Africa's foremost yacht manufacturer

26 January 2005 - 15:36

With an extensive background in yacht building, John Robertson and Jerry Caine started working together as partners in 1985. Over the next five years, they were responsible for the construction of more than 400 vessels, mainly production boats on an assembly line basis.

Founding their own company in 1991, the initial business of Robertson and Caine was that of custom yacht builders, from 36ft fiberglass monohulls to state of the art carbon fiber racing boats up to 70ft in size. Some of these boats have been winners of major international races such as the Cape to Rio race won by Broomstick in 1993, and the company was also licensed to build the Mumm 36 class racer

In 1995, Robertson and Caine entered into a close relationship with The Moorings to provide catamarans for their worldwide fleets of bareboat and crewed yachts. The business then switched primarily to being a production facility, manufacturing 38' to 62'catamarans. In less than 4 years, Robertson and Caine delivered the 100th catamaran to The Moorings, with every one of them delivered on their own bottoms around the world: what better proof of their blue water capacities?

In 2000, the relationship expanded with the launching of The Moorings Private Sales to provide sales and service support to individuals wishing to own a Leopard cat for private use. With exlusive representation worldwide, The Moorings Private Sales proposes all models with a very complete sail away package as standard and alternative owner layouts with a choice of optional equipment.

In 2002, Robertson and Caine introduced innovative new flagship products with the Leopard 62, the largest semi production cat to come out of South Africa, and the sleek, fully equipped Lion 46 power catamaran, for the Moorings fleet and for private sale.

The company operates out of premises situated in Cape Town, South Africa, just a few miles from the city center and the Table Bay harbor. To accommodate demand for their successful product lines (over 150 units produced), the production facility has expanded and the staff has grown from 30 employees in 1995 to over 200 today.
