Californian LRC Trawler
"Ten Knots" is one of 200 solid fiberglass LRC Trawlers built to high standards by the original Californian yard under the supervision of designer, Jule Marshall, and lovingly cared for and updated by her knowledgeable owner. Her long keel provides excellent tracking and directional control and the wide, secure sidedecks and cockpit make line-handling and docking a breeze. With only slightly more than 1,000 hours on the twin naturally-aspirated CAT 3208 Diesels and the 1998 Westerbeke 8 Kw Generator, you can expect many years of reliable and trouble-free cruising.

The Californian name has been used by several different companies over the years, but one man has been associated with the boats since their inception: yacht designer Jule Marshall.

Marshall founded the original Californian Yachts back in the 1970s. He designed the Californian line’s hulls, while Myrna Elliott designed the boats’ interiors.

One of the company’s first success stories was the 42 LRC, introduced in 1976. At a time when trawler yachts built in the Far East dominated the American market, Marshall and Elliott built their 42 foot trawler in Orange County, California.

From a quality standpoint, the 42 LRC was a standout – and a strong competitor for similar-size boats from such industry heavyweights as Grand Banks and CHB. Unlike the Asian trawlers, the Californian 42 LRC interior was crafted of mahogany, not teak. In addition, the 42 LRC was faster than other trawlers of the 1970s and early 1980s.

The Californian 42’s twin 210 hp Caterpillar naturally-aspirated diesels are reliable and remarkably fuel efficient. The twin Caterpillars produce a cruising speed to around 14 knots, while maintaining fuel economy of approximately 1 mpg.

Along with offering a bit more speed than the competition, the Californian 42 LRC offered well-thought-out practicality. Wide walk-around sidedecks, a convenient two-stateroom layout and expertly installed plumbing and electrical systems won many fans.

"Ten Knots" has always been professionally maintained and her current owner is dilligent with all aspects of preventive maintenance. A recent comprehensive survey completed in August 2006 confirmed her overall condition as described in this listing, concluding that she "is considered structurally sound and satisfactory for its intended use at this time...and can be considered a reasonable marine and fire risk for cruising coastal and offshore waters." The survey can be made available upon inspection. "Ten Knots" is an excellent investment opportunity in a quality American-made yacht that is well-respected as a classic, economical to run, fully updated, and ready to cruise.
